CEN Names Angelica Linen Supply
2007 Employer of the Year

In May of 2006, Liberty’s Career and Employment Network (CEN) began a partnership with Angelica Linen Supply through the New York State Industries for the Disabled. This new partnership has been both rewarding and challenging. For CEN, the rewards came from working with an outstanding and understanding staff at Angelica. They have gone out of their way to provide employment opportunities to a number of individuals in our supported employment program, and have not been deterred by the sometimes frustrating details of making this “connection” work.

The challenge has been finding the right individuals to fill the positions which have been so generously offered. In addition, transportation arrangements needed to be made to allow for individuals who live in Montgomery County to travel to Ballston Spa to work.

By their willingness to be flexible with scheduling and assisting with transportation options, Angelica has allowed eight individuals to try their hand at sorting, folding and counting linen to be bundled and sent to institutions throughout the northeast. Currently, three individuals, Irene Bradt, Keisha Saunders and Misty Green are employed at Angelica, and are coordinating their schedules to ride to work with a woman from Amsterdam. Irene, who received her vocational training at the Liberty work center many years ago, has just completed one full year of employment, and is doing well. We anticipate fine tuning the details that will make this opportunity a successful placement for additional individuals in the coming years.

Employees at Angelica who have been instrumental in contributing to the success of this program are: Larry Varecka, Craig Andrews, Debbie Bouchard, and Patty Clous and Dawn, the Floor Supervisors.

Angelica Linen Supply will be presented with the Employer of the Year award at
CEN’s Annual Awards Luncheon scheduled at Crystal Ristorante on October 24.

CEN Names Amsterdam Printing Company
2006 Employer of the Year

October has been designated as National Disability Awareness Month, and each year in October, Career and Employment Network(CEN), the supported employment program of Liberty Enterprises takes a moment to reflect on the generosity of those businesses in Montgomery County that support the rights of individuals with disabilities to seek and maintain employment. Since 1993, CEN has named an “Employer of the Year” at its annual luncheon celebration. This year, Amsterdam Printing Company has been designated to receive this honor.

Amsterdam Printing Company has been an innovator in providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to integrate their workforce by means of enclave work groups, and individual competitive placements. In 2004, Amsterdam Printing Company and Liberty Enterprises celebrated a ten-year anniversary of this cooperative work relationship, which currently includes more than twenty-five workers.

In addition to assisting individuals to build work skills through the enclave program, Amsterdam Printing Company has been instrumental in giving countless individuals an opportunity to obtain entry-level positions in production and building services. The AP&L staff has been supportive and compassionate, and is always willing to work with the CEN job coaches to work through any difficult situations.
