Family Support Services

Liberty offers a wide range of services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in Montgomery County. These services are a vital resource for families caring for an individual with a disability at home. Services are offered in the community, in family homes, and at certified sites. Liberty’s staff provides the attention and services each person needs to grow and flourish as an individual.

Programs include:

Respite Program
A minimum of 120 hours of respite care is available each year — at no cost — to the family of an adult or child with a developmental disability. Trained Liberty staff will provide care for individuals in a Liberty home or in your home. A voucher program gives your family the option of hiring someone you know to provide respite; an hourly stipend is reimbursed by Liberty. When a family crisis occurs, Liberty helps with emergency respite as needed — at no cost.

Recreation Program
A variety of athletic, social, and special events are scheduled on evenings and weekends each month. Activities include bowling, swimming, cooking, arts and crafts, dances, and participation in Special Olympics sports training and events. Transportation is provided.

Family Support Services

Liberty supports participation in Special Olympics sports training and events. Alex and his fellow athletes take great pride in the chance to compete and receive recognition for their sports achievements.

Weekend Getaways/Camping
Whether relaxing with a group at an Adirondack retreat, enjoying a fun-filled weekend at an adventure camp, or taking a memorable trip with friends to catch ballgame, weekend getaways offer individuals new experiences, while providing overnight respite for their caregivers.

After School Program
Liberty offers an after school program to school age individuals with developmental disabilities and their school-aged siblings (available to children ages 5–21).

School Recess Program
Available to any child with a developmental disability residing in Montgomery County. Trained staff provides enjoyable learning activities during scheduled breaks throughout the school year.

Hispanic Outreach
Bilingual staff helps families find services and supports in the community and at Liberty.

Testimonials

“My friend Debbie loves people and she has her own way of communicating. You can sort of sense what she wants or needs. She does try to verbalize them as much as she can, but just from her facial expressions, you know that she's happy here at this beautiful new building.

(Speaking in regard to his relationship with an individual at the new Day Habilitation Program in Canajoharie, NY – the first project of the Building Bright Futures Capital Campaign)”
