Liberty ARC: Where There Are Always Opportunities to Achieve

I am Liberty Story: Pursue Your Dream with Flexible Schedules. Headshot of Ben Martin.

“God saved my life a few years ago, so I decided I wanted to pursue becoming a minister,” Ben Martin, a Direct Support Professional at Liberty ARC said.

Ben says working at the agency has allowed him to pursue his dream of studying Pastoral Ministries at Asbury University in Kentucky.

“It’s been tough because the academic level is very high, but I’ve had so much support from Liberty ARC,” he said. “The flexibility of working here has made it possible for me to pursue this dream and come back home to a job when the semester is over.”

Ben has only worked at the agency for a year, however, he says he’s already deeply connected to his job and is excited to be coming back for the summer.

“I love working at Liberty ARC because I love helping and working with the individuals we support,” he said. “If I’m not helping someone then I’m not as motivated to work.”

Ben also said he really enjoys his coworkers and feels like everyone at the agency respects each other.

“One of my favorite aspects of Liberty ARC is the respect I get from management and the respect everyone shows towards each other and the individuals we support,” he said. “This job can be tough, like any other job, but management at the agency is very supportive and helpful. They’re also incredibly flexible with schedules and they work with you so that you get the hours you’re looking for.”

Ben said he feels fortunate to work for the agency because it gives him the opportunity to help improve someone’s life and help build their self-esteem.

“When quality of life is improved for the person you’re supporting, it’s a great feeling,” he said. “If they’re struggling with their self-worth, I’ll tell them that ‘the world may say you have a disability, but a real disability is not being able to love,’ for example. All of the individuals I’ve supported are kind, loving people and their disability isn’t a disability at all – it’s an obstacle, and obstacles are opportunities to achieve.”

Ben’s advice for anyone considering a position at Liberty ARC is “be prepared for an incredible experience.”

“You might not feel like you’re ready for this position or you might say you could never do it, but honestly, once you start doing this job, you realize how amazing it is,” he said. “You’re given this opportunity to help people and it’s a wonderful feeling. It’s almost crazy we get paid to do this.”
