Living Liberty ARC’s Mission Every Day

During this challenging time – in the midst of COVID-19 – it’s important to remind everyone why we work here at Liberty ARC.

We work at Liberty ARC  to fulfill and accomplish our mission:

“Together we support people with disabilities to achieve a quality of life each person values.”

Senior Hab Coordinator Kara Reed is an excellent example of someone who lives every day by the agency’s mission.

Kara has worked at Liberty ARC for the last 23 years. She started her career as a bus monitor and a residential Direct Support Professional (DSP). She worked in the residential setting for 19 years, moving from DSP to Charge then Assistant Manager. She made the transition to Senior Hab Coordinator for Liberty ARC’s Community Connections day program a few years ago.

“I was in my early twenties and was looking for something different to do in my career,” she said. “A friend of mine, who worked in the Business Office, thought I would enjoy this line of work. She was right; I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Kara said there are many different perks to her job that make every day enjoyable.

“I love the fact that no two days are alike, every day is different and unique,” she said. “The agency also provides a lot of opportunity for growth and advancement. The flexibly is great too –  if your personal life changes and you need a different shift, there are usually jobs that you can find  within the agency to accommodate your needs.”

However, Kara said her favorite aspect of working at Liberty ARC is the way she’s formed relationships over the years.

“The bonds that you make while supporting those with disabilities is something you will never forget,” she said. “Whether you work here for a summer as a college student or for 30 years, this profession has a way of changing you in a positive way.”

Liberty ARC not only changed Kara’s life in a positive way, it also brought her to the love of her life.

“I met my husband at Liberty 20 years ago when we both were working for Residential,” she said. “I saw the way he interacted with everyone he supported, with such kindness and patience. It sounds corny, but that’s why I fell in love with him.”

Kara suggests anyone looking for a fulfilling career should apply to Liberty ARC.

“If you are looking for something different, and you want to have a job that makes a difference in someone’s life, then give it a try,” she said. “I promise you, the positive values you will obtain from working at Liberty is something that you will have for the rest of your life.”
