Mother-Daughter Team at Liberty ARC

I am Liberty Story: Join the Liberty ARC Family Today. Headshot of Leanne and Janice Sheckton.

Leanne Sheckton and her mother, Janice Sheckton, have worked a cumulative 48 years at Liberty ARC. The bonds they formed early on influenced them both to turn their positions at Liberty ARC from jobs into careers.

Janice started working at Liberty ARC in 1982 when she returned back to the area after being away at school in Oklahoma. Her original plan was to take on a job at Liberty ARC while starting up a horseshoeing business. She wanted to devote herself to her business fulltime once everything was settled, however, those plans changed.

“I met with HR and was told about Liberty ARC’s programs. There were only six residential houses at the time, and DSPs worked seven days on and seven days off. I worked with the children and I loved it. I fell in love with this place; my career flip-flopped,” Janice said.

Janice worked as a DSP for three years and then took a position as the Staff Training Specialist, helping new and current employees train for their roles in the agency, which she’s been doing ever since.

Leanne started working at Liberty ARC in 2008, right after graduating high school. Her original intention was to take a position at Liberty ARC while working towards a degree in Early Childhood Education. Her dreams changed, however, and she decided to get her Associates Degree in general studies while advancing her career at Liberty ARC.

“I started working full time and I loved the people I worked with. I knew I wanted to be an assistant manager and when my current position opened up I knew it would be perfect for me; it combined teaching, which I love doing, and the opportunity to continue working at Liberty ARC,” Leanne said.

Leanne recently took on the newly created position as Residential Assistant Manager-Trainer which helps support assistant managers learn their role in the residential homes where they work.

Leanne always knew she wanted to work for Liberty ARC in some capacity because her mother, Janice, was always introducing her to the individuals she supported and she wanted the same experience.

Janice and Leanne recalled an individual that Janice supported when she first started her position at Liberty ARC 37 years ago. This same individual later became someone Leanne supported when she started her full time role at the agency.

“It was such a coincidence,” Leanne said.

“The individuals we support here at Liberty ARC become family to us,” Janice said. “This particular individual went to my wedding, she’s gone on vacations with us…they just became family, and now they’re becoming Leanne’s family too.”
