Self-Directed Services

Liberty ARC offers a Self-Directed Services program, supporting people with disabilities as they take control of how their OPWDD-approved services are purchased and structured.

What are Self-Directed Supports?

Participants are able to choose the right supports and services for them, hire their own staff and team to support their choices, and access additional resources that will support individual interests and goals.

With support from brokers and Fiscal Intermediary employees provided by Liberty ARC, program participants direct where they live, how they spend their days, which staff to work with, what they want to do to remain healthy and active, and which educational or career opportunities they’d like to pursue.

Additional Benefits of Self-Direction:

  • Increase independence by choosing the right supports and services for YOU.
  • Access to additional resources that will support your interests and goals.
  • You can pair traditional services with Self-Direction, so you can keep services you are currently enjoying or choose other services that interest you.

How Self-Direction Works:

  • Your Circle of Support: You will work with a team of people who will guide and support you in the planning process of your yearly budget and how you want to spend it. Support teams include a Care Manager, Support Broker, Fiscal Intermediary, and anyone of one’s choice.

  • Your Budget & Planning: Once approved for a personalized budget through New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, you will gain the flexibility to use your budget to hire staff and pay for supports and services based on your interests and goals. Your Support Broker will also work with you to plan your yearly budget and how it will be spent.
  • Your Services, Your Direction: During Annual Life Plan meetings, your Care Manager will work with you and your team to develop a Life Plan that will identify your interests, goals, and the best supports for you.
  • What are Fiscal Intermediary staff?  Fiscal Intermediary staff are professionals who work with you to complete billing and payment for your staff, goods, and services, as well as other supports outlined in your budget. They’re knowledgeable about resources, services, and work closely with you and your care manager to make your self-directed budget meet your service goals.
  • Launch Your Plan: Once budgets are approved and your team and plans are in place, you’re ready to begin! You can also make changes to your plan as needed.
